"Self publishing can not be done alone."
POACHERS CRANBERRIES & SNOWSHOES
Chuck Shipley
About Chuck Shipley
A retired Game Warden, Chuck spent 32 years living the antics that make up the stories in POACHERS CRANBERRIES & SNOWSHOES. There were too many to put into a single volume so the remainder will be in POACHERS BEANS & BIRCH BARK to be published in 2004. Chuck and his wife are presently living in their retirement home near Rocky Mountain House, Alberta.

Crazy poachers.
Nutty pranks,
shenanigans
and escapades
are bound
to occur when
you mix people
and animals.
These stories
are from a
colorful world
known to few.
I wrote the
book when
persuaded
by my friends
and family.
Given Chuck's
success as
an author,
with over
2000 books
sold in 8
weeks and
outselling
Stephen King
in a local
bookstore,
we asked Chuck
a few questions
about his
experience.
When asked why he chose to self-publish, Chuck replied, "If you do the research, you'll find that first time authors face monumental hurdles convincing publisher's that their book is worthy of publishing. You'll find out how many times you have to submit it for review and be turned down. If you get through all the hoops, and find a publisher, your return will be minuscule. This all led me to the decision to do it myself.
Self-publishing allows you to design your book from cover to cover. While this means a cash layout at first, self-gratification comes when you market your book and see the returns- financial and personal- that you have achieved. For me this has been a most rewarding experience!"
We then asked him what his experience self-publishing was like and what kind of advice he would give to authors thinking about doing it themselves.
Chuck replied,
"Self
publishing
cannot be
done alone.
My experience
of having
a printer
and cover
designer who
were willing
to go the
extra mile
to help a
first time
publisher
were a major
part of Poacher's
success. You
can write
the best stories
in the world
but if the
cover does
not make people
curious and
pick it up
to see the
professional
layout and
stories inside,
it's all for
naught.
So, when you go to a major book store, know the author of evey book in there wants his or her book to be a best. Do your homework, use professionals, and you won't be intimidated by the fact that you are self publishing.
You will find
that the story
writing is
the easy part.
Marketing
is where the
rubber hits
the road.
You must have
the personal
drive, or
a fortune
to hire someone,
to publicize
your title
or you won't
sell books.
If you can
face the marketing
side, and
part of that
is to be prepared
ahead of time
with a plan
plus some
energy, then
common sense,
a desire to
succeed, and
a belief in
your book
and personal
ability will
take you the
rest of the
way. Remember
to work with
a reliable
cover designer
and an excellent
printer, and
you will be
well on your
way to success."
